Turbine Troubles

Short answer: Before certification, jet engines go through destructive tests. In a fan blade-out test, a blade is released at full power with a small explosive charge, and the casing must contain the fragments and the engine must shut down safely.

Other tests fire birds, ice and water into running engines. The footage shows engine tests on a test stand.

Video transcript: Turbine Troubles: In a Blade-Out Test, a Fan Blade Is Blown off at Full Power

Did you know? Jet engine failure tests are rigorous procedures conducted to ensure engine safety and reliability under extreme conditions. These tests simulate various failure scenarios, such as bird strikes, blade breakages, and ingestion of debris to assess the engine's durability and containment capabilities. For example, during a blade-out test, an engine fan blade is deliberately detached at full power to verify that the engine casing can contain the fragments and prevent damage to the aircraft.
