Synthetic Conception

Short answer: In vitro fertilization (IVF) fertilizes an egg with sperm outside the body. The ovaries are stimulated to produce several eggs, which are collected in a minor procedure and combined with sperm in the lab, sometimes by injecting a single sperm into the egg.

Embryos are grown for a few days, and one or more are transferred to the uterus. The first IVF baby, Louise Brown, was born on July 25, 1978, and more than 10 million babies have since been born through IVF. The footage shows microscope views of eggs, sperm and early embryos.

Video transcript: Synthetic Conception: In IVF, an Egg Is Fertilized in a Lab Dish

Did you know, in vitro fertilization, or IVF, is a process where an egg is fertilized by sperm outside the body, typically in a laboratory. The process begins with stimulating a woman's ovaries to produce multiple eggs, which are then retrieved surgically. The eggs are combined with sperm in a petri dish to facilitate fertilization. Once fertilized, embryos are monitored for a few days, and one or more healthy embryos are selected for transfer back into the woman's uterus, where they may implant and develop into a pregnancy. IVF is a common treatment for infertility and has helped millions of people conceive. NOW YOU KNOW!
