Sun Seekers

Short answer: Young sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus) show heliotropism: before the flower heads open, the buds turn to follow the Sun from east to west during the day and swing back to face east overnight. The motion is driven by an internal clock and uneven stem growth.

Once the heads mature and bloom, they stop tracking and mostly stay facing east, which warms them in the morning and draws more pollinators. A uniform field of east-facing heads can give the false impression that open flowers track the Sun. The footage shows sunflower fields, with the presenter.

Video transcript: Sun Seekers: Young Sunflowers Follow the Sun, Then Stop

Sunflowers are not only known for their vibrant appearance but also for their unique behavior known as heliotropism. DID YOU KNOW? Young sunflower blooms exhibit heliotropism by following the movement of the sun across the sky. This means that during the day the face of the sunflower tracks the sun from east to west maximizing its exposure to sunlight. As the sun sets the sunflower resets and prepares to face east again in the morning. This behavior is more noticeable in younger sunflowers and tends to decrease as they mature. NOW YOU KNOW!
