Seahorse Secrets

Short answer: Seahorses (genus Hippocampus) are small marine fish. They are among the few animals in which the male becomes pregnant: during mating the female deposits her eggs into a brood pouch on the male's belly, where he fertilizes them and supplies oxygen and nutrients as they develop.

After roughly two to four weeks, depending on the species, he releases the young through muscular contractions, sometimes hundreds or more at once. The footage shows seahorses and a male giving birth, with the presenter.

Video transcript: Seahorse Secrets: Male Seahorses Carry the Eggs and Give Birth

Seahorses, with their whimsical appearance and lifestyle, hold a fascinating distinction in the world. DID YOU KNOW? Unlike most animals, it is the male seahorse that carries and gives birth to the offspring. During the courtship ritual, the female seahorse transfers her eggs to a specialized pouch on the male's abdomen. The male seahorse then fertilizes and incubates the eggs within this pouch until they hatch. When the moment arrives, he goes into labor, experiencing contractions to expel the tiny seahorses into the water. This distinctive reproductive role reversal demonstrates the fascinating adaptations that can evolve in the animal kingdom. NOW YOU KNOW!
