Rolling Steel

Short answer: Plate rolling bends flat steel into curves and cylinders. In a common three-roll machine, two lower rollers support the plate while an upper roller presses down, and the plate is run back and forth as the pressure increases step by step.

Adjusting roller position and pressure sets the curve for plates of different thicknesses. The footage shows a thick plate being rolled.

Video transcript: Rolling Steel: Three Rollers Can Curl a Flat Steel Plate Into a Tube

Using rollers to bend steel is a common industrial process called plate rolling or metal rolling, where steel is passed through a series of rollers to form it into curved shapes or cylindrical forms. The process involves three main rollers, two lower rollers that support the steel plate [...] roller that [...] downward pressure to bend [...] incrementally as it moves [...] the machine. By adjusting the pressure and positioning of the rollers, manufacturers can achieve precise bends or curves in steel plates of various thicknesses and lengths. NOW YOU KNOW!
