Rocket Stage Release

Short answer: Stage separation is how a multistage rocket discards empty stages to save mass and reach orbit.

Separation systems use explosive bolts or frangible joints, pneumatic pushers or springs, and sometimes small gas thrusters to push the spent stage away; the next stage then ignites its engine as the old stage falls away. The footage, credited to aerospacefanclub, shows an onboard view of a stage separating above Earth.
