Retarred Roads

Short answer: Road resurfacing (re-tarring, as the title puts it) restores pavement by adding a new asphalt layer.

Crews assess cracks and potholes, clean and repair the surface, spray a tack coat so the layers bond, then lay hot mix asphalt with a paving machine and compact it with rollers to the right density and smoothness. The footage, credited to techniquebuildings, shows a paver laying asphalt.

Video transcript: Retarred Roads: Resurfacing Lays a Fresh Asphalt Layer Over the Old Road

Did you know, re-tarring roads, commonly referred to as road resurfacing, involves applying a new layer of asphalt to restore roadway surface integrity and extend its lifespan. The process begins with a thorough assessment of the existing pavement to identify areas of distress such as cracks or potholes. Preparation includes cleaning the surface and addressing any structural issues to ensure proper adhesion of the new layer. Tack coat is then applied to promote bonding between the old and new asphalt layers. Subsequently, a fresh layer of hot mix asphalt is laid using paving machinery, followed by compaction, to achieve the desired density and smoothness. NOW YOU KNOW!
