Pendulum Waves

Short answer: A pendulum wave uses a row of pendulums whose lengths are tuned so each swings at a slightly different frequency. Released together, they drift in and out of phase, producing traveling waves, beats and symmetric patterns, and after a set period they return to their starting alignment.

Video transcript: Pendulum Waves: A Row of Pendulums of Slightly Different Lengths Makes Snaking Waves

Did you know, pendulum waves are a visual demonstration of synchronized motion created by arranging multiple pendulums of slightly different lengths in a line. When all pendulums are released at the same time, each swings at its own natural frequency, causing them to move in and out of phase with one another. This creates a mesmerizing wave-like effect where complex patterns like traveling waves, beats, and symmetry appear and shift over time before eventually returning to the starting alignment.
