Leech Gourmet

Short answer: Not all leeches drink blood. Some land and freshwater leeches are predators that hunt earthworms and other invertebrates, seizing prey and swallowing it whole or sucking out its fluids.

The Reel names Haemadipsa picta, the tiger leech, which is usually described as a blood-feeder, so I attributed the species claim to the Reel. The footage shows a leech consuming an earthworm.

Video transcript: Leech Gourmet: Some Leeches Skip Blood and Hunt Earthworms Instead

Earthworm eating leeches like Haemadipsa picta are specialized predators that actively hunt and consume earthworms, rather than relying on blood meals. These leeches are equipped with strong jaws and specialized teeth that allow them to latch onto an earthworm and draw out bodily fluids. Some species even have digestive enzymes that help break down the worm's tissues, making it easier to ingest. Unlike the more familiar blood sucking leeches, these predators play an important ecological role by controlling earthworm populations and recycling nutrients back into the soil. NOW YOU KNOW!
