Lava Land

Short answer: Submarine volcanoes erupt lava, ash and gas that cool quickly in seawater and pile up into seamounts. With repeated eruptions they can break the surface and form islands or chains, as with Hawaii, and Iceland's Surtsey, which emerged in 1963.

Video transcript: Lava Land: Undersea Eruptions Can Build Islands From the Seafloor Up

Did you know? Ocean volcanoes create new land through underwater eruptions that release lava, ash, and gases, building up over time to form seamounts, islands, or even entire island chains. When magma reaches the seafloor and erupts, it cools rapidly upon contact with water, solidifying into rock. Repeated eruptions stack these layers until they rise above sea level, as seen in places like Hawaii. NOW YOU KNOW!
