Insect Murder Mesh
Short answer: A bug zapper uses a transformer to charge an inner wire grid to a high voltage. Ultraviolet light or bait attracts insects; when one bridges the gap between grid wires, current flows through it and kills it.
An outer protective mesh keeps hands and larger objects away from the live grid. The footage shows insects being zapped.

Electrified inner grid.
Transformer steps up voltage.
Video transcript: Insect Murder Mesh: Bug Zappers Lure Insects With UV Light Onto an Electrified Grid
Did you know? Bug zapping meshes work by using a high-voltage electrical grid to instantly kill insects on contact. These devices typically consist of an outer protective mesh and an inner electrified grid powered by a transformer. The protective mesh ensures safety by preventing larger objects, like human hands, from touching the electrified inner grid. When an insect flies toward the zapper, it is attracted by UV light or a bait substance placed within the device. As the insect comes into contact with the inner grid, it completes the circuit, causing an electric current to pass through its body. NOW YOU KNOW!
