Hose Goals

Short answer: Firefighters can use a wide fog pattern from a hose as a protective water curtain. Fine droplets absorb heat, especially as they turn to steam, cool nearby surfaces and block radiant heat, and the steam can dilute oxygen near the flames.

Crews use it to advance on or retreat from fires. The footage shows firefighters advancing behind a water spray.

Video transcript: Hose Goals: A Wide Water Fog Can Shield Firefighters From Radiant Heat

Did you know? Fire hoses shield firefighters from flames by providing a continuous stream of water that absorbs heat, cools surrounding areas, and creates a protective barrier. The water spray reduces the temperature of the fire and nearby surfaces, preventing heat from radiating towards the firefighters. Additionally, the mist and steam generated by the water can displace oxygen around the fire, suppressing flames and reducing their intensity. NOW YOU KNOW!
