Firefighting Drones

Short answer: Firefighting drones are uncrewed aircraft that give crews aerial views, use infrared and thermal cameras to find hotspots and map fire spread, and in some designs spray water, foam or retardant through tethered hoses or onboard tanks. They are useful for high-rise buildings and rugged terrain.

Video transcript: Firefighting Drones: Drones Can Spot Hidden Hotspots With Thermal Cameras

Did you know, firefighting drones are specialized unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, designed to support firefighting operations by providing aerial views, monitoring hotspots, and even extinguishing flames in hard-to-reach areas, equipped with infrared and thermal imaging cameras. These drones help identify heat sources and map the spread of fires, giving ground crews critical information for effective containment. Some drones are fitted with nozzles or tanks to deliver fire retardants, water, or suppressant foam directly to small fires, particularly useful in high-rise buildings or rugged terrain where traditional firefighting methods are challenging.
