Dipping Dipper
Short answer: The white-throated dipper (Cinclus cinclus) is Britain's only aquatic songbird, and its family, the dippers (Cinclidae), are the only passerines that feed underwater.
A dipper walks down a rock into a fast stream, clamps onto the bed with long legs and sharp claws, and uses short, strong wings as flippers to push itself down against the current. Solid bones cut its buoyancy. An oversized preen gland waterproofs about 3,300 feathers, roughly twice a blackbird's count, and nasal flaps keep water out. Its blood carries extra hemoglobin, and its heart rate drops as it dives. It hunts mostly mayfly, stonefly and caddisfly larvae under the stones.
What should you know about Dipping Dipper?
Quick facts. Each one stands alone and has a stable ID you can cite.
The dipper is the only songbird family that hunts underwater. It walks down into fast streams and uses its wings as flippers.
A white-throated dipper has about twice as many feathers as a blackbird, oiled by an unusually large preen gland.
Video transcript: Dipping Dipper: This Songbird Walks Along the Bottom of Rushing Streams
DID YOU KNOW? The White-throated dipper is a remarkable songbird known for its ability to walk underwater in fast-moving streams. Unlike most birds that float, the dipper grips rocks with strong toes and uses partially open wings to "fly" against the current beneath the surface. Its dense plumage traps air for insulation, while a high metabolic rate and extra oxygen-carrying capacity in its blood help it withstand cold, rushing water. NOW YOU KNOW!

The write-up
This songbird walks along the bottom of rushing streams. Solid bones, flipper-like wings and blood rich in hemoglobin.
- Exhibit A
The only diving songbirds
Dippers (family Cinclidae, five species) are highly specialized freshwater passerines. The white-throated dipper is Britain's only aquatic songbird and ranges across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia.
- Exhibit B
Walking and swimming
Dippers grip rocks and walk down them until partly or fully submerged, then hunt between stones. They can also swim with their wings. All five species can feed by walking along a riverbed.
- Exhibit C
Built to sink
They don't have webbed feet. Instead, solid bones reduce buoyancy, short but strongly muscled wings work as flippers, and long legs with sharp claws hold onto rocks in fast water.
- Exhibit D
A wetsuit of feathers
One dipper had 3,322 feathers to a blackbird's average of 1,704. That's not because the feathers grow closer together: the plumage covers more of the body, including heavy down on the head and wings. A huge preen gland keeps it oiled, and trapped bubbles make diving dippers look silvery.
- Exhibit E
Diving physiology
Dipper blood holds more hemoglobin than other passerines' for storing oxygen, and the heart rate drops immediately on diving and keeps falling underwater.
- Exhibit F
Seeing and breathing underwater
Strong focusing muscles reshape the lens to correct for water's refraction, and nasal flaps seal the nostrils.
