Alcubierre Drive

Short answer: In 1994, physicist Miguel Alcubierre showed that Einstein's general relativity allows a 'warp bubble': spacetime contracts ahead of a ship and expands behind it, so the ship can cover distance faster than light as seen from outside while never locally outrunning light inside its bubble.

It is a mathematical solution, not a machine. The geometry requires exotic matter with negative energy density. Quantum physics allows only tiny, fleeting amounts of negative energy, and in 1997 Michael Pfenning and Lawrence Ford estimated that a 100-meter bubble would need far more negative energy than the mass-energy of the visible universe. Later papers have trimmed the estimates and found other problems, including how a crew could ever start or steer the bubble. No warp drive has been built or tested.

Video transcript: Alcubierre Drive: A Warp Drive That Works Only on Paper

DID YOU KNOW? The Alcubierre warp drive, proposed by physicist Miguel Alcubierre in 1994, is a theoretical solution to Einstein's field equations enabling faster-than-light travel. By contracting spacetime in front of a spacecraft and expanding it behind, the drive forms a warp bubble of flat spacetime. Inside this bubble, the spacecraft remains stationary, experiencing no acceleration, while the bubble moves at superluminal speeds. The mechanism requires exotic matter with negative energy density to manipulate spacetime curvature, a substance not yet observed in nature. NOW YOU KNOW!

The write-up

A warp drive that works only on paper. Einstein's equations allow it, but it would need vast amounts of negative energy that no known matter supplies.

  1. Exhibit A

    A solution, not a machine

Miguel Alcubierre published the warp metric in Classical and Quantum Gravity in 1994. It's a solution to Einstein's equations that shows the geometry is allowed; it says nothing about how to build it.

  2. Exhibit B

    How the bubble works

Spacetime expands behind the ship and contracts ahead of it. As seen from outside, the bubble can move faster than light, much as distant galaxies can recede faster than light in an expanding universe.

  3. Exhibit C

    Inside the bubble

The ship sits in a region of nearly flat spacetime and moves along a free-fall path, so the crew feels no acceleration. Locally, nothing outruns light; only the bubble's overall motion is 'superluminal'.

  4. Exhibit D

    The exotic-matter problem

The metric needs negative energy density, which violates the energy conditions ordinary matter obeys. Quantum effects allow only small, brief negative energies, and Pfenning and Ford estimated a 100-meter bubble would need more negative energy than the visible universe's total mass-energy.

  5. Exhibit E

    More problems

Later analyses found the violations remain even at low speeds, and that a crew inside a faster-than-light bubble couldn't signal its front edge, so they couldn't start, steer or stop it from inside.

  6. Exhibit F

    Concept art, not hardware

In 2014, artist Mark Rademaker worked with NASA physicist Harold 'Sonny' White on the IXS Enterprise, a ring-shaped warp-ship design inspired by this research. It's a visualization; no warp drive has been built or tested.
