# Where Your Food Is Grown (DD-211)

> Plains are broad areas of flat or gently rolling land. Many have deep, fertile soils built up by rivers, glaciers or wind-blown loess, which makes them some of the world's most productive farmland; the North American Great Plains and the Eurasian steppe are major grain regions. Grasslands on plains support grazing animals such as bison in North America and antelope and gazelles in Africa and Asia. Floodplains along rivers absorb floodwaters and renew soils with fresh sediment. The footage shows plains, farmland and herds, with the presenter.

## Write-up

Much of the world's grain grows on plains. River plains are refreshed by floods.

1. **Flat land**: Plains are flat or gently rolling.
2. **Fertile soils**: Many have deep, fertile soils.
3. **Grain regions**: The Great Plains are a major grain region.
4. **Grazers**: Plains grasslands support grazing animals.
5. **Floodplains**: Floodplains absorb floods and renew soil.

### Transcript

DID YOU KNOW? plains are vast stretches of flat or gently rolling land, and they're among Earth's most fertile and significant landscapes. They serve as crucial agricultural hardlands, where nutrient-rich soils yield bountiful crops, supporting a significant portion of human food production. These expansive terrains are not only agricultural powerhouses, but are also critical habitats for diverse wildlife, offering grazing grounds for animals from bison to gazelles. Plains play a pivotal role in ecosystems, acting as natural floodplains and maintaining water cycles. Protecting and sustainably managing plains is vital for biodiversity, food security, and the well-being of our planet. NOW YOU KNOW!
