# The White Temple (DD-042)

> Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, stands about 15 km south of Chiang Rai in northern Thailand. In 1997 the Chiang Rai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat set out to rebuild a run-down local temple entirely at his own expense, and he's still building. White plaster stands for the Buddha's purity, and thousands of mirror chips for the Buddha's wisdom. To reach the white ordination hall (ubosot), visitors cross the 'bridge of the cycle of rebirth' over a pit of hundreds of reaching stucco hands representing desire and suffering. Inside, murals mix flames and demons with Neo, Superman and a Terminator. The site survived a 2014 earthquake, and the nine-building plan may not be finished until about 2070.

## Write-up

Thailand's White Temple is an artist's work in progress. Chalermchai Kositpipat began rebuilding Wat Rong Khun in 1997. It may not be finished until 2070.

1. **An artist's rebuild**: By the late 20th century the original Wat Rong Khun was in disrepair. Chalermchai Kositpipat, a Chiang Rai-born artist, decided to rebuild it completely and pay for it himself. He began in 1997 and has spent more than 40 million baht.
2. **White and mirrors**: The structure is a concrete frame with a wooden roof, finished in white plaster set with mirrored glass. White stands for the Buddha's purity, and the mirrors for the Buddha's wisdom.
3. **The bridge of rebirth**: To reach the ubosot you cross a bridge over hundreds of stucco hands reaching up from below. They represent desire and suffering. Crossing means leaving worldly attachment behind on the way toward enlightenment.
4. **Body and mind**: A gold-covered building (the restrooms) stands for the body and worldly desire. The white hall stands for the mind.
5. **Pop culture inside**: Murals inside the hall set flames and demons beside Michael Jackson, Neo from The Matrix, a Terminator and Superman, alongside images of war and terrorism.
6. **Still under construction**: An earthquake centred in nearby Mae Lao damaged the site on May 5, 2014. After engineers found the buildings structurally sound, Chalermchai pledged to restore it. The plan calls for nine buildings, with completion expected around 2070.

## Reel vs. record

- **Confirmed from the frames**: the Reel is about Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai province (captions at 0.8–4.0 s). The symbolism (white = purity, mirrors = wisdom, hands = desire and suffering) matches the artist's and other sources. [Wikipedia; Thai Holiday Guide; Artsy]
- **Missing context**: 'construction began in 1997' leaves out that it's a private rebuild of an older, run-down temple by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, paid for with his own money. Wikipedia calls it a privately owned art exhibit in the style of a temple. [Wikipedia; Thai Holiday Guide]
- **Missing context**: it's still unfinished. The plan calls for nine buildings, with completion expected around 2070. [Wikipedia; Artsy]
- **Location**: the temple is about 15 km south of Chiang Rai city, not in the city itself. [Artsy; Wikipedia]
- **Style**: 'The Wat Rong Khun' doubles up, since 'wat' already means temple. [frames]
