# The Land of Israel (DD-206)

> Israel declared independence on May 14, 1948, as the British Mandate for Palestine ended. Neighboring Arab states invaded the next day, starting the 1948 Arab-Israeli War; the war also displaced hundreds of thousands of Palestinian Arabs. Israel has since fought further wars with neighboring states, including in 1967 and 1973. Jerusalem is holy to Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Israel designates Jerusalem as its capital, while Palestinians seek East Jerusalem as the capital of a future state, and the city's status is disputed internationally. The footage shows Jerusalem and other locations, with the presenter.
