# The Future Is Now (DD-238)

> Computer chips, or integrated circuits, are made on wafers of very pure silicon. Each wafer is coated with a light-sensitive photoresist and exposed to ultraviolet light through a mask in a step called photolithography, which prints the circuit pattern. Etching removes unwanted material, and the steps of deposition, doping, lithography and etching are repeated many times to build up billions of transistors. Finished wafers are tested and cut into individual dies, which are packaged into chips. The footage shows chip fabs and cleanrooms, with the presenter.

## Write-up

Every chip starts as a thin slice of silicon called a wafer. Patterns are printed onto it with light through a mask.

1. **Silicon wafers**: Chips are built on silicon wafers.
2. **Photoresist**: Wafers are coated with photoresist.
3. **Photolithography**: Light through a mask prints the pattern.
4. **Etching**: Etching removes unwanted material.
5. **Packaging**: Dies are cut and packaged.

## Reel vs. record

- **Note**: The voiceover says 'silicone wafer'; chips are made on silicon, the element, not silicone.

### Transcript

Computer chips, also known as integrated circuits, are at the heart of modern electronics, powering everything from smartphones to supercomputers. The production of computer chips begins with the design and fabrication of a silicone wafer, which serves as the foundation for the chip. The silicone wafer is then coated with a photosensitive material and exposed to ultraviolet light through a mask, creating a pattern on the wafer. This pattern defines the circuitry of the chip. The wafer is then etched to remove the unwanted material, leaving behind the desired circuitry. The chips are then tested, packaged, and ready for use in electronic devices, with the demand for faster, more powerful, and energy efficient chips on the rise. The semiconductor industry continues to innovate, driving advancements in technology, and shaping the future of electronics. NOW YOU KNOW!
