# Let's Mix It Up (DD-240)

> Concrete is a mix of cement, aggregates such as sand and gravel, and water. The cement reacts with water in a process called hydration, binding the aggregates into a hard mass; it hardens by this reaction rather than by drying, which is why it is kept moist while it cures. Strength depends on the proportions, especially the water-to-cement ratio, and on mixing and curing. Ready-mixed concrete is delivered in drum trucks and poured into formwork. It is the most widely used building material, with production commonly estimated at more than 10 billion tonnes a year. The footage shows concrete plants and construction, with the presenter.

### Transcript

Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world, known for its strength, durability, and versatility. The production of concrete begins with the combination of cement, aggregates, such as sand or gravel, and water. These ingredients are mixed together to form a paste that hardens over time to create a solid mass. The quality of concrete depends on the proportion and quality of its components, as well as the mixing and curing processes. Once mixed, the concrete is transported to the construction site and poured into molds or formwork, where it is allowed to set and cure. With over 10 billion tons of concrete produced annually worldwide, this essential material plays a crucial role in shaping the fabricated environment around us. NOW YOU KNOW!
