# It Better Be Boron! (DD-209)

> Boron is element 5, a metalloid. It's an essential micronutrient for plants, needed for cell walls and growth. Adding boron oxide to glass makes borosilicate glass, which has low thermal expansion and resists thermal shock, so it's used for lab glassware and some cookware. Small amounts of boron improve the hardenability of steel, and boron carbide is one of the hardest known materials. Boron is used as a dopant in silicon semiconductors and in fiberglass, and borates such as borax are used in detergents and bleaches. The footage shows lab experiments, glassmaking and fields, with the presenter.
