# Doom Plume (DD-636)

> Volcanologists call these eruption columns or ash plumes. In an explosive eruption, gas-charged magma shatters into ash, tiny fragments of rock and volcanic glass less than 2 mm across, which shoots out with steam and gases. The jet first rises on its own momentum. It then keeps climbing because it is hotter and lighter than the surrounding air. Heights vary a lot. Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull plume in April-May 2010 mostly reached about 5-10 km, yet its fine ash drifting over Europe led to more than 100,000 cancelled flights. Mount Pinatubo's column in the Philippines on June 15, 1991, rose more than 35 km. The January 15, 2022, eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai reached about 57 km, into the mesosphere, the highest volcanic plume recorded in the satellite era. Ash is dangerous to aircraft because it can damage engines, instruments and windscreens, and it can stop jet engines. Health agencies such as the USGS and IVHHN list short-term effects including coughing, sore throats, eye irritation and worsening asthma or bronchitis. People with heart or lung conditions are most at risk. The footage shows a towering orange-lit ash cloud, but the Reel doesn't say which volcano.

## On the timeline

- **June 15, 1991**: Mount Pinatubo's climactic eruption sends an ash column more than 35 km high
- **2010**: Eyjafjallajökull's ash, drifting over Europe in April and May, leads to more than 100,000 cancelled flights
- **Jan. 15, 2022**: Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai's plume reaches about 57 km, into the mesosphere

## Quick facts

- **DD-636-F01**: Hunga Tonga's 2022 plume reached about 57 km. _(Write-up · Exhibit B (How high))_
- **DD-636-F02**: Eyjafjallajökull's 2010 ash led to more than 100,000 cancelled flights. _(Write-up · Exhibit C (Not always high))_

## Write-up

Ash that climbs into the stratosphere. Big eruptions loft ash plumes tens of kilometers high.

1. **What ash is**: Volcanic ash is shattered rock and volcanic glass, not soot. It forms when gas-charged magma blows apart.
2. **How high**: Pinatubo's 1991 column rose more than 35 km, and Hunga Tonga's 2022 plume reached about 57 km.
3. **Not always high**: Eyjafjallajökull's 2010 plume mostly stayed at 5-10 km, yet it still grounded more than 100,000 flights.
4. **Danger to jets**: Ash can damage engines, instruments and windscreens, and it can stop jet engines.
5. **Health**: Short-term effects include coughing, eye irritation and worsening asthma, especially for people with heart or lung disease.

## Reel vs. record

- **Wording**: scientists say 'eruption column' or 'ash plume', not 'volcanic debris plume'.
- **Note**: 'Tens of kilometers': only the biggest eruptions do this (Pinatubo 1991, more than 35 km; Hunga Tonga 2022, about 57 km). Many plumes reach only a few kilometers and can still disrupt air travel, as Eyjafjallajökull's 5-10 km plume did in 2010.
- **Note**: 'Driven by explosive energy and heated gases': the jet starts on momentum, then keeps rising because it is hotter and lighter than the surrounding air.
- **Note**: 'Damage respiratory health': agencies describe mostly short-term irritation (coughing, sore throat, worsening asthma or bronchitis), with people who have heart or lung disease most at risk. Ash also irritates the eyes.
- **Missing**: ash is pulverized rock and volcanic glass, which is why it is so abrasive to jet engines and can stop them mid-flight.

### Transcript

DID YOU KNOW? Volcanic debris plumes are enormous clouds composed of ash, rock fragments, and volcanic gases expelled violently during eruptions. Driven by explosive energy and heated gases, these plumes can soar tens of kilometers into the atmosphere, dispersing fine ash particles over vast areas. The debris within the plume can disrupt air travel, damage respiratory health, and impact ecosystems by coating land and water surfaces. NOW YOU KNOW!
