# Carved by Ancient Rivers (DD-210)

> A canyon is a deep, narrow valley with steep sides, most often cut by a river over millions of years. As the land is uplifted or the base level drops, the river keeps cutting down, exposing layered rock in the walls; geologists read these layers as a record of past environments. The Grand Canyon, carved by the Colorado River, exposes rocks spanning nearly 2 billion years. Canyons are also shaped by weathering, flash floods and, in some places, glaciers. Many are protected as parks. The footage shows canyons from the air and the rim, with the presenter.

## Write-up

Canyon walls record millions of years of rock layers. Rivers cut them as land slowly rises.

1. **Deep valleys**: Canyons are deep, steep-sided valleys.
2. **River-cut**: Most are cut by rivers over millions of years.
3. **Rock layers**: Their walls expose rock layers.
4. **Grand Canyon**: Its rocks span nearly 2 billion years.
5. **Other forces**: Weathering and floods also shape them.

### Transcript

DID YOU KNOW? canyons are the stunning results of millions of years of erosion. They are among Earth's most awe-inspiring natural formations. These deep, narrow valleys carved by rivers reveal the layers of time through their stratified walls, offering a glimpse into the planet's geological past. They are also vital for scientific research, offering insights into Earth's history and climatic changes. However, these majestic landscapes are vulnerable to environmental threats, including climate change and human activities. Protecting canyons is essential to preserve their natural beauty, ecological value, and geological significance for future generations. NOW YOU KNOW!
