# Canute the Great (DD-216)

> Canute the Great (Cnut) was a Danish prince who became King of England in 1016, King of Denmark in 1018 and King of Norway in 1028, ruling all three until his death in 1035. Historians call this union the North Sea Empire. He kept peace in England for most of his reign, worked with the Church and English nobles, and supported trade across the North Sea. A later legend says he ordered the tide to stop to show his courtiers the limits of royal power. The footage shows illustrations of Canute and his court, with the presenter.
